Golden Elixir:

The Art of Making Traditional Ghee

Ghee is more than just clarified butter; it is the heart of Ayurveda—a "golden liquid" that nourishes the body and supports digestion. Here is how you can prepare this sacred healer in your own kitchen.

  • 1 kg Unsalted Organic Butter
(Note: 1 kg of butter yields approximately 600-700g of pure Ghee.)

How to prepare:

1.Melting:Place the butter in a heavy-bottomed stainless steel pot. Let it melt slowly over medium heat.

2. Clarifying:As the butter melts, foam will rise to the surface; gently skim it off with a spoon. You will hear a distinct "crackling" sound—this is the water evaporating from the fats.

3.Listening:After about 20 minutes of steady cooking, reduce the heat to low. Listen closely to the oil; when the crackling sounds almost completely subside, your Ghee is ready.

4.Straining:Remove from heat and strain through a cheesecloth into glass jars. Be careful not to let the white milk solids (sediment) at the bottom mix into your clear Ghee.

5.Storage:Store in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator.

An Ayurvedic Wisdom

The most auspicious time to prepare Ghee is during the Waxing Moon (as it moves toward full). Making Ghee during this lunar phase is believed to infuse it with more nourishing and healing energy.

How to Use

  • In the Kitchen:Use it to add a rich aroma to your meals or enjoy it directly. Always use a clean wooden spoon to keep the Ghee pure.
  • As a Remedy:For eye irritations or styes, a drop of melted (warm, not hot) Ghee can be applied to the eye in the evening. Repeat for 1 or 2 days as needed.
